ANOTHER WIN FOR GUERNSEY IN THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNORS’ CUP
Following the Savills’ Inter Island Race last Saturday, Sunday morning saw the Annual Race for the Lieutenant Governors’ Cup between Guernsey and Jersey. The Cup was presented by the Lieutenant Governors of each Island back in 1931 and has been contested on an annual basis since then, barring the War years, a few times when weather conditions meant it couldn’t take place and Covid. The tally to date is Jersey have won 25 times and Guernsey 36 times.
This year was the turn of the RCIYC in Jersey to host the event and the cup was raced for over a series of three short races set in St Aubins Bay between teams of three yachts representing each Island. The Guernsey Team comprised of BlackJack, Jostler and Kaya II.
Despite the light winds of 4-7 knots the experienced race team were able to set courses inside the bay, which resulted in three very close races. Martin Ozard Blackjack was able to successfully get away on all three races whilst Jostler and Kaya fought it out with the Jersey boats.
All of the three races were very close with the Guernsey team coming out as victors.
Race 1
Guernsey – 9 points Jersey – 12 points
Race 2
Guernsey – 10 points Jersey – 11 points
Race 3
Guernsey – 10 points Jersey – 11 points
Jersey’s Governor Vice Admiral Jeremy Kyd CBE watched the action on the water from the St Helier Lifeboat, but couldn’t stay to watch to the end because the lifeboat received a call to attend to a vessel in distress!! Luckily, it was for a fairly minor incident and he was able to attend the club after racing to present the trophy to the victorious Guernsey team, which was accepted on behalf of the team by our Commodore Peter Lloyd and Rear Commodore (Sail) Andy Round.
Many thanks to the RCIYC Jersey for an extremely well organised morning of racing and also their generous hospitality at the club afterwards.
We look forward to the friendly rivalry in defending the trophy next year in Guernsey.
Andrew Round.
